Editing

Editing your book can be quite an adventure. You may have mixed emotions about the whole thing. That’s natural. When you hire an editor, you share your soul with another human being, often someone you’ve never met. It’s important to choose someone you trust, someone who will honor your work and your wishes. When we work together, you’ll have nothing to worry about. You’ll have the benefit of my experience and expertise while maintaining total creative control.

I offer two styles of editing. You can choose to be “hands off” and leave it to me, or you can “co-pilot” with me along the way. Either way, you will have the final decision on all edits.

Here’s how it works:

We start with a Sample Edit. This is so I can get a sense of your writing style, your voice, and how much editing your manuscript will require. At the same time, you’ll get a sense of my editing style.

First you send the beginning of your manuscript as a word processing document in standard manuscript format. This is usually the first 20 pages plus the Intro and Table of Contents (if you have them).

I then read and edit a portion of your work and return the manuscript to you in two file formats:

  1. *one clean copy - with all of my edits accepted

  2. *one tracked copy - showing all of my changes

Having two formats allows you to read the manuscript as a reader would and then to go through it piecemeal, if you desire, and accept or reject any edits I’ve made.

We then set up a phone appointment. At this time we’ll address any questions you may have about the process or the edits. On this call, we can decide if you prefer to work “hand off” or “hands on.” If you choose “hands off,” I will provide a project rate to edit the entire manuscript. If you choose “hands on,” we will design a schedule for your sessions.

My rate for the initial edit and consult is $525. payable in advance.

If this all sounds good to you, let’s begin...
